Mission Statement Every person should believe that they can empower themselves to take charge of their own healthcare decisions and they can safely and effectively self-treat common ailments and conditions. They can also decide when to seek professional medical advice or when they can effectively use alternative health therapies. Too many Americans have surrendered their abilities to make decisions about their healthcare. The cost of traditional healthcare services are increasing faster than income, making access more difficult for many Americans. Twenty percent of our population is without healthcare insurance, and those that have insurance are having premiums increased or benefits reduced. There is an increase of company decisions to restructure benefit packages by lowering or completely eliminating healthcare benefits. We are the most medicated country in the world. Half of us are on one or more prescriptions, not including all the over-the-counter medications. As an effective and safer alternative, readers can learn and use natural therapies for self-treatments.

What do these terms mean and why should we want to know? Dr. John Sherman, Ph.D, OTR, CST, explains why in Do-It-Yourself Natural Health: Natural Health Trio. At first glance, this book appears to be an encyclopedia of natural health remedies, but it is arranged by topic rather than by alphabetical order. Digging deeper, it is an in-depth review of common natural therapies. In a society where we take too many medications, experience too many side effects, put up with obnoxious pharmaceutical ads, and undergo expensive medical treatments, Dr. Sherman provides an alternative and helps readers take charge of their own health. He explains the drawbacks of the modern pharmaceuticals and health care delivery system and then describes various natural approaches. The information he provides should help those who are seeking balance, safety, and lower costs. The layout of Do-It-Yourself Natural Health: Natural Health Trio is simple and logical, beginning with an explanation of the ancient Chinese philosophy behind the natural health movement. After presenting the basics of acupressure for the relief of symptoms and illnesses, aromatherapy for stress, and herbal therapy for healing and repairing, the author provides two additional sections. The first is a guideline for treating 47 common conditions and the second is a section of "helpful hints and tips," suggestions to deal with injuries, aches, and pains. Explanations of how various remedies work accompany the instructions for using each of them. The author offers appropriate medical disclaimers and precautions with each remedy and does not bad mouth the medical establishment for those who need it. Do-It-Yourself Natural Health: Natural Health Trio should be the first book in a library of natural health. Dr. Sherman is a well-credentialed occupational therapist who maintains a practice as well as his teaching responsibilities. He is an authority on natural health and the author of numerous articles and books on the topic. The fact that he sells knowledge rather than vitamins lends credibility to the book. Five stars for a book that is helpful for beginners as well as a handy reference for those who are more experienced with natural health. Rebecca Sisk, PhD, RN ForeWordreviews.com ### At last, a book for novice and expert alike on three of the most popular alternative therapies in the realm of Natural Health. Dr. John Sherman has written a concise yet complete book on the self treatment of more than sixty everyday ailments and conditions, and has written it in an easily understandable manner. The format is logical and easy to follow, the information presented in everyday language, and the conditions and ailments addressed are some of the most frequently occurring: This is true of both the Pocket Reference and the full length book. Dr. Sherman has been both a practicing Licensed Occupational Therapist and Certified Shiatsu Therapist for more than thirty-three years. His areas of therapy have included intensive care, mental health, trauma, burns, orthopedics, gerontology, and pediatrics. Eighteen years ago, the author began his studies in the realm of natural therapies as an alternative to unnecessary prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. After educating himself in these therapies that had been practiced for hundreds of years safely and effectively in countries around the world, Dr. Sherman dedicated himself to teaching his patients and clients in the natural therapies so they could effectively treat themselves for everyday maladies. DO-IT-YOURSELF NATURAL HEALTH and its companion pocket reference were written with that same dedication, knowledge, and desire to empower everyone to be able to practice self-treatment. The book begins with an informative and useful introduction into the subject at hand"Natural Health and self-treatment. Brief explanations follow for how to perform acupressure and information on Aromatherapy and Herbology. Twelve common herbs are discussed with both their usage and any needed medical precautions. Next, the Ten Primary Pressure Points are identified and the significance of each as well as its location is provided. Common Conditions and their treatments are then presented, with self-treatment instructions for conditions ranging from Allergies to Jet Lag to Toothache being addressed. Helpful Hints and Tips follow the self-treatment section, then a list of Suggested Readings and References. Three Appendices in the big book covers Essences and Oils, Anatomical References of the Human Body, and a Definition of Terms. The author has kept the reader/client in mind with both content and structure. When I received the book for review, I couldn’t wait to thumb through it and see which of my own maladies were addressed"and just how effective my self-treatment would turn out to be. I wasn’t disappointed: A frequent sufferer of tension headaches, I mastered the skill of acupressure to the appropriate pressure points and was able to relieve the pain without any medication. It took a few tries at first to find the pressure points and to be able to apply just the right touch, but really not a long learning curve when you consider the benefits. DO-IT-YOURSELF NATURAL HEALTH is going to be an oft-used reference in my house, and the DO-IT-YOURSELF NATURAL HEALTH POCKET REFERENCE is already in my purse. I recommend you consider this book for your own best health and happiness.

Many of these alternative therapies, such as acupressure, aromatherapy, and herbal therapy, can be practical replacements for unnecessary drugs.
