Natural Therapy Tip 55
Earache Relief
Besides the usual hair blower gently heating the ear canal and using pressure points just in front of the ear and in the depression just behind the ear lobe for relief, I learned a new way to help alleviate the pain of an earache. This is not to bore you, but it may be interesting information to learn and save for an upcoming party for impressing your family and friends.
All of us have nerves that basically control our senses of taste, smell, sound, and sight. They are also very active in conveying messages of pain. Since these twelve pairs of nerves originate from the head and not the neck or back, they are called Cranial Nerves. Here is a list of the twelve pairs of nerves:
Cranial Nerve: Major Functions:
I Olfactory smell
II Optic vision
III Oculomotor eyelid and eyeball movement
IV Trochlear innervates superior oblique muscles
turns eye downward and laterally
V Trigeminal chewing, face & mouth touch & pain
VI Abducens turns eye laterally side to side
VII Facial controls most facial expressions
secretion of tears & saliva taste
VIII Vestibulocochlear (auditory) hearing
equilibrium sensation
IX Glossopharyngeal taste
X Vagus stimulates digestive organs taste
senses carotid blood pressure
senses aortic blood pressure
slows heart rate
XI SpinalAccessory controlstrapezius& sternocleidomastoid
muscles of the back
controls swallowing movements
XII Hypoglossal controls tongue movements
Most of us have learned that opening our mouths can improve our hearing. We have also learned that swallowing or yawning can cause our ears to “pop” equalizing the pressure on our ear drums. Here is the newest, to me, technique for reducing the pain of an earache.
Place a sterile roll of cotton gauze, about the size of the ones dentists use, between the upper and lower teeth in the back of the mouth on the side of the earache. Gently clench the teeth using the cotton gauze roll as padding. The clenching of the teeth inhibits the pain impulses that cause the pain. This would probably affect Cranial Nerves V and VII. Although these particular nerves innervate the mouth and lower jaw, branches of these nerves may also affect the ear. Just as Novocain reduces the sensitivity of these nerves, clenching the teeth may also have the same effect on an earache.
I have not personally used this technique, but many friends have used it and said that it works, so I’m sharing this information out of their insistence. It should also be noted that this is a very short term fix for the problem. Most of my friends who swear by this technique also took several ibuprofens for longer lasting relief.
My sincerest thanks to all of you for reading my Natural Health Tips and I enjoy sharing some of these interesting and useful natural approaches for better health. From your responses I’m glad you also enjoy them. Each summer I spend my August preparing for upcoming book trade and library shows for the fall or promoting an upcoming book. I somehow have fallen into this habit of having a newly published book on the odd-numbered years, and my next book will be ready next summer of ’09.
I also take this month to prepare my calendar for any speaking engagements for the upcoming year. It seems that talk show hosts and producers want a longer lead time to schedule guests or presenters.
My Natural Health Tips will continue again in September. I will also make available, free of charge, a copy of the Natural Health Tips 31 through 60 when we get there, just in case you missed any or want to share them with a friend. In the meantime, have a very happy and safe August, and I will rejoin you in September.
