Winter Colds

We have had a very mild winter in Las Vegas.  Temperatures have been in the high 60’s to 70 degrees with little wind and some rain which is very welcome in the desert.  However, winter colds are common when we forget to dress for the weather and become lax in following good health rules.  Our immune system is also challenged when co-workers are sharing germs and bacteria that can cause colds and flus.

I caught a cold this Thursday that was not severe but an annoyance.  Today I am over it because of some simple rules.  I was able to follow some basic steps to rid the cold in three days to feel better and you may, too.

1.         Wash your hands frequently and use a hand sanitizer.  Washing your hands for ten seconds can rid 98% of germs and bacteria.  A large container of hand sanitizer can cost as little as $4.00 and provide protection for you and your family for several months.  Note: Sanitizers can dry the skin and make hands feel rough, but there are sanitizers that contain lotion to help keep hands soft and supple.

2          Continue taking vitamins and minerals that strengthen the immune system.  Daily vitamins and minerals with several herbs and Omega 3 have helped me maintain my energy and reduce my cold symptoms.   That and a homeopathic nose spray have reduced my discomfort.

3.         Choose better foods for health.  Eat more fruits and vegetables and skip the cheeseburgers and fries.  Fruits, such as apples and oranges, are plentiful this time of year.  The key is to eat the whole fruit, not just drink the juice.  Apple and orange juice have fewer nutrients and higher levels of sugar.  Eating the whole fruit provides pectin and other properties that aid better health.

4.         Stay hydrated.  Water and teas are viable fluids to stay hydrated.  They help flush the body of toxins and transport nutrients for cellular health.  Coffee provides little nutrition and alcoholic beverages dehydrate the body..

5.         Get plenty of rest.  Rest and sleep are essential for healing.  I was not able to slow down from a busy work week but I was able to sleep a bit longer and set aside several activities that would have taxed my energy level.

These are the steps that work for me but each of us probably has a few good ideas that work just as well.  Protect yourself, treat symptoms as soon as possible, and minimize the length of discomfort.

Health and happiness.

Nightshades.

Nightshades are a diverse group of foods, herbs, plants, and trees that contain alkaloids.  An alkaloid is a chemical compound that contains nitrogen that is found in plants and animals.  Alkaloids are more important to the pharmaceutical industry for medicines, but the properties of nightshades are also in common foods.  Some of these medicines are morphine, quinine, and belladonna.   Some of the more common products are caffeine and nicotine.  Common foods that contain alkaloids are white potatoes, tomatoes, sweet and red peppers, and eggplant.  The sweet potato does not contain the properties of a nightshade.

Food products can also be in the category of nightshades, such as pimentos and Tabasco sauce.  Products that contain cayenne pepper, pimento, and other additives are classified as nightshades.  Examples are pimento stuffed olives, pimento cheeses, and other food products that contain pimento, cayenne, or paprika

Alkaloids can impact nerve and muscle function and interrupt digestive function in animals and humans, and may also negatively affect joint function and health.  Because the alkaloid content in many of these foods is low compared to other plants in this group, the effects may occur in those who are sensitive to alkaloids.  Cooking even lowers the level of alkaloids, making the effects minimal or nonexistent.  Green and sprouted spots on potatoes usually reflect high alkaloid content, so sprouted areas should always be removed before cooking or the potatoes should be discarded altogether.

For these reasons, people with arthritis are encouraged to avoid nightshades.  In addition to alkaloids providing medicinal relief, many nightshades can cause or increase joint pain.  Common sites for pain are located in the vertebrae of the spine, hips, knees, and shoulders. These irritants can accelerate the discomfort and counteract other medications that bring relief.

Since more than 40 million people in the U.S. suffer from some form of arthritis, many can benefit from avoiding foods with alkaloids.  In addition, those suffering from fibromyalgia may also decrease discomfort by not eating these same foods.

Personally, I do not have a noticeable reaction to nightshades.  On occasion, I like a baked potato with very little butter and sour cream and maybe some herbs sprinkled on top.  I may even have some salsa with it to add a little zest for flavor, but I know a few friends who would have a negative reaction to that serving.   Eat healthy, eat smart.  If you are sensitive to nightshades, try to select foods and medications that do not contain alkaloids.

Health and happiness.

Circadian Rhythm

Nearly all living mammals and plants have a circadian rhythm.  This twenty-four hour cycle affects how we sleep, eat, and work.  It also has an effect on how we relate with each other on a casual or intimate level.  There are clear patterns of brain wave activity, hormonal production, cell regeneration, and other biological activities linked to this daily cycle. Many of us, however, have difficulty adjusting to the change of light and dark even though the twenty-four cycle remains fairly constant.

Although our days are lengthening, many of us are still affected by the change of light and dark hours especially in the northern states.  Some of my Alaska friends have said that although their sleep cycle was not affected, the adjustment to the long nights was at times a challenge.  They also shared that adjusting to the long summer days was easier than the long winter nights.  The time from late autumn through winter could bring on a disorder called Circadian Rhythm Disorder.  This condition appeared to be related to the change of light exposure and delay in the affected individual’s circadian rhythm.

Seasonal affective disorder is a type of mood disorder that is characterized by recurring episodes of depression and the onset and remission seem to be related to the changing of seasons. This condition would most commonly begin in autumn or winter and disappear by spring. While some related this condition to “post holiday blues,” many related it to the adjustment to the changing light and dark hours in a twenty-four hour day.

The most common sleep disorder is insomnia and may be particularly disabling in the elderly. Although medications have been an aid, some seniors found that behavior therapies have had a more lasting effect.  The drawback is number of sessions, time, and expense.

Some of the natural remedies for insomnia are drinking a nutmeg tea or rubbing a drop of nutmeg oil on the forehead.  Another treatment has been a glass of grapefruit juice.  Grapefruit juice has been associated with side effects with some medications, so check with your healthcare professional.

One of the most effective natural treatments for insomnia is a warm glass of milk with one-half teaspoon of nutmeg or a teaspoon of honey.  The National Institute of Mental Health states that a warm glass of milk contains Tryptophan, Tryptophan is an important amino acid that triggers Seratonin.  Seratonin is a neurotransmitter that is important in conducting nerve messages from and to the brain, including the sleep process.  Increasing Seratonin is a natural choice for a good night’s sleep because it helps you wake refreshed the same time everyday and does not have a “drug hangover.”

Health and happiness.

Natural Savvy.

I have encouraged every patient, client, and friend to consider four factors when taking any medication.  That includes prescriptions, OTC products, and herbs.  Yes, herbs are the first medications used to treat diseases and symptoms.  Side effects with herbs are infrequent but can be noticeable, even serious, in combination with prescription medications.  Checking with your healthcare provider is encouraged.

The four factors are the following:

!.  The type of medication. Understand why a medication is taken and the side effects and risks when taking that medication.  Sometimes a powerful medication can also contain the potential for profound side effects.

2. The dosage amount and frequency of taking the medication.  Making sure the dosage is the correct amount will help reduce the risk of overdosing or under dosing.  Once a day, twice a day, or three times a day?  Following the frequency of the medication can help keep the medication level in the body at the proper amount.

3.  The time of day taking the medication.  Some medications tend to work more effectively in the morning, midday, or evening.  For example, melatonin is most effective when taken midday or late afternoon when the melatonin level is lowest, not in the evening or bedtime.

4.   This is the most important factor – you.  Monitoring how the medication is working, side effects, changes in behavior, such as eating and sleeping habits, and energy level, are all indicators of how well the medication is working   Other factors can be changes in blood pressure, body temperature, blood sugar, and oxygen level of the hemoglobin.  Report any changes that are not expected to your physician or healthcare professional.  These changes could be dangerous or even life threatening.

My example is a friend who went to her physician for her monthly checkup for her medication.  When she had the prescription filled, the first clue was the large increase in  cost.  The second was the change in dosage.  The third was the frequency.  Instead of three times a day, the new prescription was a time release of one time a day.  The fourth was the dosage; one-third the amount of her previous dosage.

This particular medication was most effective for her when one dose was taken in the morning and two doses taken at bedtime.  The direction of this new medication was to be taken in the morning only.  By evening she had less than half the medication in her system and by morning the medication was completely gone.

By early morning she began to experience debilitating pain, increased, pulse rate, and changes in mood.  Taking the medication brought little relief.  During the week she became more irritable and had a lower attention span and productivity on her job.

Instead of contacting her doctor, she continued taking the prescription for the entire month feeling that her doctor was reducing her dosage and trying a new version of the medication.  That was a mistake.  She realized that if she had contacted his office the problem would have been discovered and corrected.

On her next office visit she related her changes in physical and emotional state and questioned why he modified her prescription.  In one minute her doctor discovered that the medical assistant pushed the wrong prescription on the computer screen.  This is not an uncommon occurance in a busy doctor’s office, but her month of discomfort was unnecessary if she had contacted her doctor.

My message is this.  Taking responsibility for your own health and wellness is the first and most important priority.  Whether taking a prescription medication, OTC medication, or herb, monitor for any positive and negative changes.  A wise physician told me forty years ago that for every positive attribute to a medication, there are two negatives.

What will help make the new year a better one? Take responsibility for your own health and stay on top of potential problems.  Watch your weight, exercise daily, eat better, and laugh a lot.  Reduce your stress, rid bad habits, and appreciate each day.  You never know what great gifts are just around the corner.

Health and happiness for 2012.

Potassium – an important mineral and electrolyte for good health when within limits.

Most fertilizers contain three basic elements: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.  I remembered the purpose of these elements of nitrogen for green leaves and stems, phosphorus for flowers and fruit growth, and potassium for strong roots.  These elements are abbreviated as N, P, and K.  Potassium, K+, is essential as an electrolyte that aids the heart to maintain a natural rhythm.  Acceptable levels of potassium are between 3.5 and 5.0.

A level below 3.5, called hypokalemia, can cause weakness, low energy level, nausea, stomach distress, and irregular heartbeat, and leg cramps.  A level above 5.0, called hyperkalemia, can cause nausea and irregular heartbeat, even stoppage of the heart.  Keeping the potassium within these limits is very important for health and wellness.  Unless prescribed by a health care professional to maintain an acceptable level of potassium, the best way to take this mineral is through natural fruits and vegetables.  Potassium in a multi-vitamin is also a good source.

I remember a time, which gives away my age, when health care professionals didn’t pay much attention to levels of vitamins and minerals.  It was pretty well assumed that the body flushed any excess of these elements to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Well, somewhere along this path, professionals began to realize that the human body doesn’t work that way all the time, so attention was given to acceptable levels to maintain better health and wellness.  This thought can also be expanded to many of our medications as well.  Too much or too little is not effective for our well being.

Keeping track of these levels can be part of our health plan.  Regular checkups, healthier lifestyles, and moderations can positively contribute to our wellness.  I think most of us have room for improvement.  I certainly do.  That’s my proactive thought for this holiday season and 2012.

Health and happiness.

Tips for Blood Pressure Monitoring

Monitoring your blood pressure on a regular basis can be a life saver.  Several authorities have offered these helpful tips to help assure that your blood pressure monitoring is as accurate as possible.

  • Measure your blood pressure the same time of each day.
  • Keep the elbow that the blood pressure cuff is on at 90 degrees.
  • Do not straighten your arm.
  • Raise the forearm to the level of your heart.
  • Breathe steadily for about a minute before taking the measure.
  • You can measure your blood pressure sitting, standing, or lying down but keep that same position each time you take your blood pressure.

Not following these rules can cause your blood pressure reading to vary as much as 10%. Remembering these simple rules will keep your readings more accurate.

The importance of vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is one of the eight water soluble B vitamins, (Cyanocobalamin) is essential for maintaining good health and wellness.  Discovered in the 1940s as a way to cure pernicious anemia, B12 assists the other B vitamins with converting carbohydrates into glucose for energy. B12 provides many other additional benefits besides aiding in energy creation and good health maintenance.
